Running – The Spartathlon

In the spring of 490 BC, the Athenians sent Phidippides as a messenger to Sparta, to ask for help in the battle against the Persians at Marathon. According to Herodotus, Phidippides arrived in Sparta "the day after he had left Athens...". On foot. Running. This was the height of human endurance! Two thousand five hundred years later, in October 1982, John Fonden, British scholar of ancient history and long-distance runner, arrived in Athens with some of his colleagues who were also marathon runners: they ran in Phidippides footsteps and proved Herodotus' claim when all three reached the statue of Leonidas in Sparta within 36-39 hours. 1984 saw the founding of the International Spartathlon Association, which organises the Spartathlon race every year, towards the end of September. Some of the most eminent long-distance runners from all over the world often participate.

Sailing – Odyssail Regata (Ionian leg)

Odyssail is a regatta held each year in the Mediterranean, from the beginning of July until the middle of August. An important international cultural and sporting event – organized and sponsored by the Greek Ministry of Culture, the Barcelona Forum 2004 and other authorities, as well as many noted and prestigious sailing clubs and federations – it follows the path of Odysseus (Ulysses, the central character of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, renowned for his guile and resourcefulness), and starts from major ports in the Mediterranean with direction specific meeting-points in Greece. The harbours where the racing fleets berth overnight are in fact amongst those that are thought to have sheltered Ulysses during his return voyage from the city of Troy to the island of Ithaca. The marina at Kalamata hosts the Ionian leg of this race.
